CF 2018 license question

We are using ColdFusion 2018 internally on Windows Server 2016. The Nutanix cluster on which ColdFusion is installed in a virtual machine is scheduled to migrate to a new Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI). This change will be transparent at layer 3 (routing). However, we need to find out if any part of the ColdFusion licensing is tied to a Windows server or to a server instance. We need to know if our ColdFusion 2018 license will still be recognized and valid after migration. Can anyone please assist with this question? Thank you.

Hi Charlie, thanks so much for replying. Please clarify your Short Answer — are you saying “No, the license will not be recognized/valid after migration”?

I would love to upgrade and hopefully those who control the purse strings will eventually agree. Since the server is internal-facing the urgency hasn’t been there.

Sorry, I was replying to “we need to find out if any part of the ColdFusion licensing is tied to a Windows server or to a server instance“. It is not.

So you should have no problem with that aspect.

As for the reason it feels safe to put off upgrading from an unsupported reason, I always lament hearing that. It’s essentially playing a game of Russian roulette, as you could just as readily have a penetration from within as from without.

Also, the savings with that limited-time deal would be US$2499 for a cf enterprise license. I’d think that should motivate those holding any purse strings. 🙂

But I’m not being argumentative, nor am I victim-shaming if you may feel your hands are tied. I’m just trying to be encouraging.

Charlie, thank you for confirming that we should not have a license issue with this migration. And I appreciate your candid feedback regarding our upgrade situation.

BTW, your name sounded familiar and sure enough I still have a bookmark to your webpage from 10+ years ago about updating the web server connector for CF10/11. Thanks for all you’ve provided to the community over the years!

Thank you, sir.

As an aside, I’m tickled even more when I might share a link to something I wrote 20 or even 25 years ago that’s still relevant. 🙂 For all that Cf has changed, some basic matters really have not…which shows its “good bones”.

Now, can people still “feed it crap” and make a sickly cf app? Of course. And some will say its heritage is holding it back. FWIW, I did a talk on the many ways cf has evolved/become modern in now its nearly 30 years: “ColdFusion: More modern than most realize”. Pdf and recording at https://www.carehart.org/presentations/#cf_moremodern

Then there’s all that Ortus is doing with their efforts to help cf folks modernize their app development and deployment. I know this is off track of your original point, but it seemed an opportune chance to make these points for some who may find this discussion. 🙂

Short answer: no

Longer answer: you’re rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Beware that Adobe stopped updating cf2018 in July 2023, five years after its release. That includes security updates.

You should be moving to cf2023–which will be updated to 2028, and which is the only version Adobe currently sells (once a new version comes out, they stop selling the previous version, so you can no longer buy cf2021.)

I’ll note as well that while Adobe only offers an upgrade discount (50% off) for those on that immediately preceding version, some good news is that one cf reseller has been authorized to offer an upgrade discount (25%) to those on cf2018 and earlier. The deadline had been set as Sept 30, but I heard from them at cf summit last week that the deadline was being extended. See more here, https://fusion-reactor.com/blog/save-25-on-adobe-cf2023-upgrades/ (which has the old date, as I write).

I know this is far more than you’d asked, but I hope you may find it to be info that you ought to have.
