I see that there are 8 updates since the version we currently have on our server.  Does one start with the earliest one and work your way down all updates or does installing the latest update take care of all previous updates???

From the email I received from the server, looks like I need to install 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and then 12.  Is this correct?

We had someone retire and I am trying to get things back up to date.

Regards,

mary

Normally, the answer would be “the updates are cumulative, and you need only apply the latest”. But with CF2018, there are some differences from that default stance, due to issues in updates 4 and 8. And this is covered in the technote that you would read for any of the later technotes. For example, see the top of the technote for the latest CF2018 update, 12, where it says first:

  • If you are applying Update 12 without applying Update 8, follow the Post Installation  steps mentioned for Update 8.

Note: If you are already on Update 8, you can apply Update 12 without performing any intermediary steps.

and then it says:

  • “If you are updating via ColdFusion Administrator:

The minimum update versions are Update 4 or higher for ColdFusion (2018 release), due to a recent change in code signing certificate.”

So bottom line: if one is sitting at update 3 or earlier (and wanting to update CF):

  • if they want to use the CF Admin UI to do the update, then to get the downloads of updates 4 and above in the UI, one must first perform update 4. (The issue fixed in update 4 had to do with downloading updates in the Admin update UI.)
  • If they are using the manual update process (not the Admin UI), then this does not apply and someone on update 3 or earlier could just go right to update 12.

Then if one is at any version of update 8 or earlier (and wanting to update CF), then Adobe is just noting how you CAN go to that latest update, but do NOT MISS how you need to FOLLOW THE POST-INSTALL STEPS of update 8, if you are using the web server connector tool (to update that), otherwise your web sites may fail.

Make sense? It’s convoluted, yes.

And there WAS to be a new CF2018 installer that would incorporate all the latest updates. It was in prerelease over the summer, but it never happened. Only an updated CF2021 installer (incorporating ITS latest update) was made available, which I’ve asked about at the blog post on these updates, but no one from Adobe has yet answered.
