Any word on the official Adobe VSCode for Coldfusion?  I’m starting to wonder.

Quick feature question – DreamWeaver has a convenient right-click, open related file which can be used to access files referenced through <cfinclude template=”../myfolder/myfile.cfm” />

Is there a similar mechanism in the VS Code Extension? (or using the stock VS Code functionality)

Thanks!

For those who may find this older post, note that Adobe did release (in July 2022) the public beta of what will be the free vscode extension. For more on it, including links to get it, docs, and more, see the post (and comments) at:

“Public beta of Builder Extension for VS Code – ColdFusion” https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2022/07/public-beta-of-builder-extension-for-vs-code/

I received a marketing email from Adobe for the Coldfusion Summit in October.  In it, they have this blurb:  “Remember to purchase a full-event or premium pass to get Adobe ColdFusion Builder for free.”  I would say that this does not bode well for a VSCode version of CF Builder.  I’m guessing that creating the debugger is tripping them up and that they just don’t have the resources.

Is Adobe going to release this before ColdFusion Developer Week in July??

In the CF Alive podcast episode 109 Meet the Adobe ColdFusion Evangelist (CF AMA) with Mark Takata I asked him about the release date for Adobe’s CF IDE based on VS Code. He said “Q2 2022”. I believe the Adobe CF dev team got delayed due to the Log4j security issue hotfix + general covid delays in Q4 last year.

Mark with Micheala on TeraTech said its “maybe” going to be called “Builder”.

Daniel, just to clarify there’s no question that it will be called Builder (CF Builder).  I’d noted that below a few months ago. My sense was that Yodeler was asking then about the timing. It had been talked about (by Adobe) already earlier in late 2020, but it did not come out with CF2021 (in Nov 2020). So that’ why I answered more about the timing, and what may be holding them up.

But yes, all signs are that it will be called CF Builder (and be based on VS Code). Until then, everyone can just start using VS code (who is not) and use the available CFML extension for it. It may not even be that the first release from Adobe will exceed what some appreciate about those.

I don’t think we need “wonder”, but only to “wait”. 🙂 Perhaps it’s taking more effort than they originally expected. Perhaps they are struggling with what to include in a 1.0 release vs what to hold for 1 1.1 or 1.2.

To that point, they did dampen our expectations by saying that we should not expect the first version to have anywhere near all the capability that the previous Eclipse-based edition did. That said, I suspect that MOST people never used even half the capability of that previous version.

Indeed, I won’t be surprised if few are satisfied with the new CF Builder. Those who used it before will complain of what it lacks, while those who never used CFB will complain if it “barely does more than existing vscode CFML extensions”.

Adobe seems in kind of a damned-if-they-do-damned-if-they-don’t situation, at least with this first version. Or at least that’s what I suspect. I could be proven wrong. Maybe the delay means they WILL come out with something that WILL impress MOST of those who try it. A boy can have dreams… 🙂

Thanks.  It would be nice if they would be transparent about it.  Are they working on it?  What kinds of features are they working on?  Are they making progress?  Is it still important?  I’m not looking for a specific release date, but some news on a semi regular basis would be nice.

They do need to come out with a version that has most of the features of the Eclipse version, otherwise it’s kind of like what’s the point.  If they don’t, then they would have to commit to supporting both versions for a while until the VSCode version has enough features.

I really hate silence for a prolonged period.  It erodes faith in the company and the product.

Well, there are just situations where their transparency falls down, either when they don’t offer much of any at all (as in this case), or in the recent updates to CF2021 and 2018 (where they had a prerelease, but the updates that came out last week were not those we had been working with in the prerelease).

But then I can report also that there was very little activity/interaction from the community in the prerelease, so perhaps they are again feeling damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Not making excuses: just sharing observations.

I agree that prolonged silence is deadly to a segment of the community. That said, there’s another (perhaps larger) segment who are just going about their day and not paying any attention to the timing of such things: they’ll look into it when it comes out, and until then they may not notice or care.

You are right that for those still using CFB2018, they would expect Adobe to update it. I’m not aware that they have specifically STOPPED updating it. While there may not have been an update in a while, it may be that there’s nothing compelling to update. (That’s not to deny that there are always bugs to be fixed. We could expect that at least those would be attended to.)

Again, I don’t speak for Adobe. But I do speak on their behalf as a fellow observer of things, sometimes offering a counterpoint to assertions some may make. It’s not to be merely argumentative, but to help readers to see that there may be another take.

More than anything, I’m sure you’d rather hear from Adobe. 🙂 We can only hope they may speak up.
