Hi,

If you do not have access to the licensing website, you could always reach out to the support team with your Order number and we would help you reclaim the serial number.

Also we could reach out to your old company to let them know that they should stop using the server with your serial number.

For any further information please reach out to me at Kishore@adobe.com.

Regards,

kishore

I’m not speaking as an Adobe representative (nor as a lawyer), but just speaking objectively from my knowledge of things.

First, let’s clarify that a CF license key is just a string of letters. If you have that string, you can put it into the CF installer or CF Admin (“system info” page) to cause it to take effect. As for whether you legitimately using that license, that depends on whether you bought it (legitimately) and are using it in accordance with the terms of the EULA (end user licensing agreement, found in a text file in the root of your CF folder, or available online).

So, if you are the one who bought the license, then you can use it on your own server (in accordance with terms of the EULA).

And if they (that former company) are using it but did not purchase it, then it would seem THEY are now technically in violation in using it. It would seem pretty clear that whoever bought it, owns it. (If you bought it but got reimbursed by them, then it would seem THEY own it. You may even find you have an employee or contractor agreement which states that they take ownership of anything you buy, for use on their server–even if they don’t reimburse you.)

So again, I am not a lawyer, so this is not legal advice. Assuming you’ve confirmed you have no reason to think they DO technically own it, though you bought it, then you may want to inform that that you will be using the license and that therefore they need to remove it and replace it with a new one. And if you want to have Adobe pursue them (and their sales/licensing folks would be only too happy to do so), you can name them here, or email cfsup@adobe.com.

As for you trying to do that (use the license key), perhaps you’re really saying you don’t know what it is, and since you don’t have access to the VM, you fear you “can’t get the key”. But here’s where again, if you are the one who bought it, you should be able to log into the Adobe licensing site (https://licensing.adobe.com/), then choose licensing>get serial numbers, to find it.

Let us know how it goes. And to the company, if you get forced to buy a new license, please don’t shoot the messenger/hold it against me. I don’t know who you are, and I’m only answering this question as an objective observer.
