Adobe ColdFusion Backward Licensing
(24)

With the recent ColdFusion 2016 release we’ve had a few inquiries as to our backward licensing policies.  We can license one version back for certain types of volume licenses.  Below are the relevant links and contact information to help you navigate the licensing for ColdFusion 11 if needed.

FAQ for ColdFusion:

https://helpx.adobe.com/coldfusion/standard/faq.html

Backward License Policy:

https://wwwimages2.adobe.com/content/dam/acom/en/buying-programs/pdfs/clp-program-guide-en.pdf

We will update our sales contact information on the web site and update this blog, but for now feel free to contact Kishore@adobe.com if you want to be directed to a ColdFusion sales resource to assist with further information.

Adobe folks, can we assume that this will be the same policy for CF2018 (which came out last week)? that one can no longer buy CF2016 but can buy 2018 and “backward license” it?

And can anyone state in simple terms how an average user, say running just 1 license of CF11 or earlier, would go about buying the CF2018 license such that it COULD be “backwards licensed” to CF2016? It’s a bit unclear from the above, with the discussion about needing to buy under the “volume licensing program”, and the PDF pointing to “CLP” program that seems to be about licensing on a 2-year basis.

Indeed, the section in the PDF on “backward licensing” says “Adobe allows Program Members to order a current-version license but use a prior version as long as the customer already owns a license of the prior version.” But we are talking here about when one does NOT already own the prior version? (In this blog post, it was about CF2016 relative to CF11. Now the question stands abotu CF2018 relative to CF2016.)

For people who do buy in volume and have dedicated purchasing people for software from Adobe, perhaps some of these things are old hat to them, but again for someone buying just a single or a couple of CF licenses, it’s not clear to us.

Finally, can a single CF2018 license bought from a reseller (like Intergral, via buy-adobe-software.com) be backwards-licensed to CF2016?

Thanks.

Hi Charlie,

Yes, a single license can be a volume license. And its eligible for backward licensing.

Thanks,
Rahul

Thanks, Rahul, but that isn’t really what I asked. I asked instead HOW such a person (buying only one license) would do that per “volume licensing”. I also asked for confirmation that this approach was still the situation for 2018, and about buying from a reseller. I hope you may be perhaps pulling someone else in to offer answers to the rest that I asked. 🙂

Charlie,
You can buy CF2018 from a re-seller and email us the order details at cf.install@adobe.com to get CF2016 keys.
The licenses purchased from adobe.com are treated as “Retail” and are not eligible for backward licensing.

So why are you saying they tack on 40%? Is that the dollar exchange or are you saying they add on 40% in USD for the ownership clause you mentioned in a previous post?

Just make sure you buy any upgrade through the USA store if in the UK or AU.. otherwise you’re being raped blind with the upgrade cost.(extra 40% for downloading from the same download server)

@All,

Please disregard my comment #9. I was mistaken, sorry. 4118895 is not a regression in CF2016 b/c the issue also exists in CF11.

Thanks!,

Intergral – makers of FusionReactor – are also an Adobe ColdFusion Authorized Global Re-seller and we offer some great prices on all CF products and can also sell CF with Platinum Support (http://adobe.ly/1VcKZbm)
Take a look here http://www.buy-adobe-software.com

Still looking for an answer to #8

“We’re on CF10, using CF11 on development for some new applications. If we want a CF11 license, are we able to get upgrade pricing when we purchase through the volume program? We’re a small company, so that makes a huge difference.”

is there a list of CLP Resellers? CF is so unpopular I had a hard time locating them via Google.

Another silent corruption bug in CF2016: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=4118895

“attributecollection broken for all tags inside a loop (silent corruption)”

Adobe that really needs noted in the Release Notes.

Thanks!,

Hi Adobe,

Why would any customer want to downgrade a CF2016 license to CF11? Well:

As you know, CF2016 shipped with a performance optimization that causes silent data corruption and messy-to-debug behavior.

The Release Notes mention -Dcoldfusion.udf.reuseTagInstances=false as the workaround for a few specific cases.

As you know, the Release Notes do not describe the optimization in detail. Nor does the Release Notes warn that the risk affects much more than the few cases listed. I have found/reported more cases myself. Others will just stumble into additional cases, not realizing what all the cases have in common: CF2016 is re-using “tag instances” (Adobe, you really should blog about what exactly this means).

What the Release Notes do indicate, however, is that CF2016 knowingly shipped w/ an optimization that it shouldn’t have.

CF2016 should’ve had a public beta. Any CF customer would have a legitimate reason for not wanting to upgrade to CF2016 until some issues like this are fixed.

Thanks!,

Probably should let people go back to the oldest version that is still under core support. It’s not our issue, but I do know we wouldn’t run a bunch of different versions of CF for the same app. Maybe they take a similar line of thought, and don’t have the upgrade budget to do all their systems?

@Mehdi, per the FAQ unfortunately CF 10 is not covered under the backward licensing. It allows only 1 version back:

Q. Can I order more than 1 version back?
A. Not at this time. Adobe is currently offering one version back only.

Is there a particular issue preventing you from migrating to CF 11 or 2016? I’d like to understand. Thanks.

No, a single license can be backward licensed if it is purchased through our volume programs. If it is purchased from the online shopping cart it wouldn’t qualify. Please feel free to email us if you need to discuss the possible scenarios.

Looking for the same answer that Brian is… Does this mean there’s no way for us to use CF11 now for a single Standard License? Even to upgrade our developer license that we’ve been, you know, developing on?

To be clear – does this mean you cannot backwards license if you buy a single license?
